YOUTH CONCERT ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR

The Winnipeg Youth Orchestras is seeking a conductor for our middle level orchestra effective July 2025. 

The successful candidate will retain part-time employment reporting to the WYO Board of Directors.

The Youth Concert Orchestra is composed of up to 60 string, brass, wind, and percussion musicians in school grade 7 or higher with a minimum playing level of Grade 6 RCM. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Musician, being a string player would be an asset
  • Experience teaching youth both individually and in group settings
  • Knowledge of selecting appropriate orchestral repertoire for diverse levels of musicians
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with youth, parents, colleagues, administrators, and board members
  • Ability to use effective conflict resolution methods to facilitate positive outcomes
  • Demonstrate leadership skills to organize and execute events and activities 
  • Experience creating positive, respectful, and inclusive musical learning experiences that promote diversity and continuous learning
  • Demonstrate organizational skills in time management, prioritization, and rehearsal planning
  • Ability to self-reflect on teaching practice, and respond to change based on feedback

Beneficial Experience:

  • Educator, B. Ed. degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience conducting youth orchestras
  • Experience leading small musical ensembles

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct auditions focused on selecting musicians based on playing ability and potential to contribute to the ensemble. Attend auditions on May 10, 2025.
  • Conduct weekly Monday evening rehearsals between September and May.
  • Teach young musicians how to behave appropriately in an orchestra setting, play their instruments with discipline and respect, and contribute to a cohesive ensemble.
  • Lead musicians to perform cohesively and confidently in concerts. Attend Sounds of Spring concert on May 5, 2025.
  • Coordinate sectional rehearsals, ensuring each instrument group receives focused attention to improve their technique and ensemble playing.
  • Arrange and facilitate masterclasses with guest artists, providing musicians with opportunities to learn from professionals.
  • Plan and oversee orchestra camp, creating an intensive and fun learning experience that promotes musical growth.
  • Organize and manage bus tours, coordinating and executing logistics alongside parent volunteers.
  • Liaise with board members, colleagues and administrators in the organization to ensure consistent artistic vision, share best practices, and coordinate joint events and performances.
  • Write monthly reports for the Board of Directors detailing the orchestra’s progress, upcoming events, financial status, and any challenges and achievements for transparent and timely communication.
