Sistema Winnipeg

The Sistema Winnipeg program is a unique partnership between the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO), Seven Oaks School Division (SOSD) and Winnipeg School Division (WSD), and provides music education to children for 2-hours after every school day throughout the entire school year (Sept – June). Students are provided an instrument, a nutritious snack, a safe space to learn, grow, and flourish where they make friends and memories to last a lifetime – all at no cost to families. This is an important program that breaks down barriers so that more kids can enjoy playing music as well as providing a supportive environment with positive adult role models.

Sistema Winnipeg musicians have the opportunity to audition for all three WYO orchestras. Offering Sistema Winnipeg musicians the opportunity to join the youth orchestra for free is a powerful initiative that breaks down financial and social barriers, making classical music more accessible to all. This approach supports equity by providing equal opportunities for musicians from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their economic status. It fosters diversity and inclusion by bringing together students from various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, enriching the orchestra with a wide range of perspectives and experiences. Additionally, this initiative actively counters the elitism often associated with classical music, promoting anti-racism by ensuring that the art form is inclusive and representative of the broader community. By embracing these values, the youth orchestra creates a welcoming environment where all musicians can thrive and contribute to the collective musical experience.

We’re also pleased to collaborate with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to offer shared performance opportunities that connect youth musicians with professional artists. This partnership not only enriches the concert experience but also strengthens community ties. As part of this collaboration, discounted tickets are available to certain performances to make classical music more accessible to families and supporters. Together, we’re building bridges between emerging talent and seasoned performers.
